Social and Fund-raising events

The Friends of the Kalderimi of South Pelion organise or are involved in fund raising events through the year. These events will always be publicised by email to members.

The annual events include:

The Carnival Dance is usually held in March to coincide with Clean Monday bank holiday weekend.

The Spring Plant Fair is held in April and is a chance to buy seeds, seedlings and more established plants for your garden, both edible and ornamental, as well as pots, bulbs, jams, cakes and many other locally produced items.

The Autumn Plant Exchange is a smaller event than the Spring Plant Fair, where you can exchange seeds, plants and garden items. This is usually held in September or October.

The Annual General Assembly which is always held on the first Sunday in November every year. Members are always encouraged to attend and vote at this meeting.

The Christmas Dance, usually held in December, to celebrate another year of discovering, identifying, clearing and walking the amazing network of kalderimi in the South Pelion area of outstanding natural beauty.

A Summer Party was held in 2014 in June instead of a winter event, as it was felt that more of our members would be able to attend.

For reports of events and other up-to-date information, please do go to our Facebook page which is updated constantly with news, articles, reports and information of interest to members. Photographs from previous events can be viewed here.

Organised walks

The Friends of the Kalderimi of South Pelion organise walks, usually every week, and an email is sent out to all members to invite them to join us. The email will give details of the start and finish time and place, whether car transfers will be necessary, the expected duration and level of difficulty of the walk, and whether a meal has been arranged at the end.

This website gives details of many of the walks, including maps and illustrated notes which can be downloaded and printed out. Go to the kalderimi and walks page.

Where there are things of special interest on the walk, such as a spring head, a stone bridge, a church, an old mill, one of the stunning views and so on, these are pointed out on the walk and walkers are given time to stop and enjoy whilst taking a short break for water or refreshments.

During the autumn, winter and spring and into the early summer, walks are arranged during the day time. However, in the heat of the summer walks are arranged for the early morning or early evening to avoid the strong sun.

During the warm weather the walks will usually end near a beach, so be prepared to swim if you care to. Walks will also normally end at a taverna where a meal will have been arranged for a set price per head (this will also be mentioned in the email from the walks co-ordinator).

For information and interest, here are lists of walks which were organised during 2013, 2014 and so far this year, 2015.
