The Friends of the Kalderimi of South Pelion

THE KALDERIMI AND WALKS

Many of the kalderimia and paths are regularly walked by our members but it is not possible to keep all the routes clear and fully signposted all of the time. We recommend you use a good map (we use the Anavasi Maps).  You can help us in our work if you pick up litter along the way and with a small folding saw or secateurs cut any small branches that sometimes block a route.

Please be careful when using these routes as in places some may be in poor condition, with loose stones and uneven surfaces. Be sure to carry water and wear suitable shoes and clothing for the time of year. If possible also take a mobile phone with you and make sure that someone knows which route you are planning to take and how long you expect to be. Many of the walks also include some beautiful beaches so it is a good idea to be prepared for swimming and lazing in the sun as well as enjoying the local food and drink at beachside tavernas.

You will encounter some very beautiful views on the walks so take time to enjoy them. You will also come across wild flowers, trees, birds, insects and other flora and fauna. We have illustrated some here in the gallery section. If you would like to add any photographs to this section, please do send them to info@friendsofthekalderimi.org together with a description of what you saw and where you saw it.

The Walks

Almost all of our signed walks are included at Walking Pilion as well as many other kalderimi walks, and also at Pilion Walks. Both of these sites include GPS tracks, detailed maps and descriptions, duration, and much interesting and practical information about the route. Both of these sites are updated and maintained regularly. The next page, The Walks, gives a comprehensive list of the walks including links to Walking Pelion and /or Pilion Walks as appropriate and also a link to the maps to indicate the location of the walk in Pelion. On the page, Maps, you will find maps of the area which you can download and print.

There are many other groups in the Pelion area who are dedicated to protecting and improving the environment, encouraging local people old and young to get involved in looking after the beautiful Pelion countryside, clearing and cleaning the old kalderimia and other routes, removing obstructive vegetation and litter and then simply enjoying walking along these paths.

Below are just a few of these groups, some of whom join us regularly on cleaning projects and all of whom have sites well worth visiting if you are interested in this area of outstanding natural beauty:

Orivatikos, Volos / Pan, Volos / Skopelos Walks
